The Runes

What are the Runes?

The runes to many, seem shrouded in mystery, myth and legend, and people often, as a result, shy away from these wonderfully helpful tools. Indeed the very word Rune is derived from the ancient Norse and Gothic, 'Runa', meaning secret or mystery.

Legend tells us the runes were recovered from Mímir's well by the Norse god Odin (whom the day Wednesday stems from his Germanic name Wodin) at great sacrifice to himself. The runes are certainly an ancient tool, used over 2000 years ago. The ancient Norse, Celts, Goths and Anglo-Saxons used them in Scandinavia, Iceland, Germany and Britain. The most famous users were the Vikings who carved them everywhere they went.

So, what are the Runes?

Odin's story could be seen as symbolic to us looking within to find answers to situations through inner knowledge, which is what the runes, in essence, are all about. The runes are a tool to help us connect with our higher self to discern the path we should take and the likely outcome of that action. The runes do not always provide a direct answer to our questions, instead giving us food for thought via options and potential outcomes. Using the runes is like talking to a friend, you take your friends advice, yet you still make the final decision based upon the advice and information received. The runes, therefore, are a tool to advise and guide us through life's twisting path of adventure.

The runes themselves are twenty-four symbols based on the sacred alphabet of the Germanic and Scandinavian peoples of Northern Europe with influences from the Anglo-Saxons and Teutonic alphabet. As such, they can be found in many variations today, on cards, wood pieces, stones and crystals. There are also many books explaining their history, legend, myth and of course how to use and interpret them.

Within the Litework store, you can find several examples of
rune-sets and informative books.
